He offended the memory of the gang boss: initial verdict overturned

On the 13th January 2020 the Palermo Court of Appeal found the journalist Rino Giacalone guilty of the crime of libel and sentenced him to pay a fine of 600 euro plus damages and court costs to civil parties, for an amount of about seven thousand euro.

The trial arose from a lawsuit by the heirs of the Mafia boss Mariano Agate in relation to an article in which the journalist reconstructed his criminal career, concluding that with his death Sicily had lost a “piece of shit”.

In June 2016 the Court of Trapani acquitted the journalist.
