Italy. The Minister: Less intimidation to journalists or less complaints?

The minister of the Interior: real trend could be a decrease in the number of complaints by the victims

OXYGEN April 13, 2023 – In 2022, 111 reports of intimidation against journalists were filed. In 2021 there were 232 complaints. The decrease is equal to 52%. The same trend was noted in the first two months of 2023 (14 acts reported compared to 28 in the same period of 2022).

How to interpret these data collected by the Coordination Center for monitoring, analysis and permanent exchange of information on the phenomenon of intimidation towards journalists, set up at the Ministry of the Interior, which works in collaboration with the Order of Journalists and the National Federation of the Press (FNSI)? Can we say that the situation has improved? In Italy are there fewer journalists threatened or fewer reports of threats? “The data must be carefully evaluated also in the light of a possible trend towards a decrease in the number of complaints by the victims”, said the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who spoke on 6 April 2023, at the presentation of these data.
