Ukrainian Interior Minister disputes the verdict

“We will appeal against the conviction of Vitaly Markiv because it is unfair and shameful”, said Arsen Avakov from Kiev.

“The decision of the Italian court that sentenced Ukrainian national guard Vitaliy Markiv to 24 years in prison for the death of Italian photographer Andrea Rocchelli will be challenged by the Kiev authorities”. This was stated by Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov on Saturday 13 July 2019, according to the news agency “112Ua”.

“A 24-year sentence for Vitaliy Markiv by the Italian court is an unfair and shameful decision. It will be appealed”, said the Ukrainian minister via Twitter.

Avakov added that Markiv, a Ukrainian soldier with Italian citizenship, and the State of Ukraine are not guilty of the death of Rocchelli, who was instead “a victim of Russia’s aggression” and its war in the Donbass region.
