All over the world press freedom is threatened by governments, businesses and other powerful interests. Journalists face many barriers

This message from Lucy Freeman, CEO of the Media Legal Defence Initiative (MLDI), was sent to Ossigeno per l’Informazione on the occasion of the Concert for Press Freedom that was held in Rome on 21 June 2018 at the House of Jazz in Roma as part of the European Musica Day, to be read during the event.

We are proud to partner with Ossigeno per l’informazione.

Journalists’ freedom to investigate and report is vital: it holds those in power to account. A free press is essential to a functioning democracy, but all over the globe the freedom of the press is threatened by governments, businesses and other powerful interests.

In many countries journalists face physical and administrative barriers, the criminalisation of speech, threats to digital rights, intimidation, violence and torture.

We believe a strong legal framework can protect journalists and defend freedom of expression.
